Select Where the District is In the Process

Develop a System

After submitting a Letter of Intent to TEA, districts appoint a TIA lead and planning committee to outline all of the components of their local designation system. This first stage in the process involves gaining a stronger understanding of what decisions need to be made in order to design an effective system, getting buy-in from stakeholders, especially teachers, and getting support from TIA technical assistance sessions.

Application Accepted

TEA will review the application and let districts know if their system is ready to begin the next stage: data capture.

Data Capture Year

In the first year of system implementation, districts capture teacher observation data and student growth data in accordance with their accepted System Application.

Data Submission & Validation

After collecting data for a full school year, districts identify which teachers qualify for each level of designation. They submit teacher designations and performance data for all teachers in eligible assignments to Texas Tech University for data validation. TEA conducts a final holistic review of systems for approval.

Awarding Designations

Districts are notified if the system and designations are approved or denied. TEA processes new and higher designations for approved districts and notifies districts of their annual allotment.

Expanding & Modifying

TEA provides an annual window for districts to make changes to their local designation system.

Districts can submit an Expansion and Modification Application to add or modify their eligible campuses or teaching assignments, teacher appraisal rubric, or student growth measure components.

Once approved, the updated system takes effect the following school year.

Renewal

TIA offers five-year system approvals for local designation systems. To continue issuing new designations, districts must submit a renewal application before the expiration date of their current system.

Testimonials
What Districts are Saying

We went into the TIA process with eyes open. What it’s done for us has been amazing. We have not seen the rifts between teachers that we were afraid of. What we have seen are teachers from every corner of our district that have been able to show growth in their students.Jim Andrus, Slaton ISD
It gives teachers the feeling of ‘we are valued here – the district is working hard to try to get us designations and to get us to stay here longer for our students.’Mario Aguirre, Slaton ISD
